Wir Kinder Vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)

I watched this film for the first time on Saturday night and it was gruesomely captivating. It tells the story of a 13 year old girl in 1970's Berlin. The film is based on the original autobiographical book Wir Kinder Vom Banhof Zoo (translating to We Children from the Zoo Station) from Vera Christiane Felscherinow. The film follows the life of the apparently pre-pubescent girl through an intense journey of heroin addiction showing the intimate and horrifying effects of reliance and vulnerability. With an exceptional accompanying soundtrack from David Bowie, this film doesn't fail to shock from beginning to end. The raw reality of danger lends this film a sickeningly encapsulating feel, and even through the bloody syringes and graphic prostituting, you will be glued to the screen.
